Paolo Pallucco and Mireille Rivier are regarded
as two of the most distinctive figures of Italian
Radical Design in the 1980s. Together, they
developed a powerful visual language in which
furniture became sculptural, architectural, and
deliberately uncompromising.
Originally a publisher and founder of Pallucco
Roma, Paolo Pallucco first specialized in re-
editions of early 20th-century furniture before
creating his own radical designs in the mid-
1980s. Guided by the idea of “Duro, Semplice e
Chiaro” (“Hard, Simple and Clear”), his work
embraced monumental forms, raw geometries,
and a stripped-back aesthetic that rejected
conventional decorative codes.
Mireille Rivier played an essential role within the
partnership by bringing technical precision and
structural coherence to their projects. She
oversaw production, proportions, and
fabrication processes, helping transform
Pallucco’s radical concepts into exceptionally
crafted objects.
Their work challenges traditional design
conventions: asymmetry, monolithic structures,
and almost architectural forms characterize
pieces that have become iconic, such as the 100
Sedie in una Notte series. Produced in very
small batches, often on commission, their works
are now regarded as visionary and rank among
the most sought-after creations of 1980s Italian
design.
